Methodical solutions and free tools for GAW measurement stations!

The intention of
GAWSTAT is
to support practical quality assurance at GAW monitoring stations
, especially automated and standardized data preparation.  This is essential for the worldwide compatibility of GAW data and hence for the performance of the Global Atmosphere Watch databases for Global climate observation.
Right at GAW monitoring stations, data quality is generated. It is essential, to support the process chain in data preparation, being the basis for final data quality and scientific results.

Treat the same problem with the same method and the same parameters worldwide and the preconditions for a comparability of produced GAW data will be considerably better!

In order to reach this goal, software is the tool of choice.  The use of one standardized set of tools which facilitates data preparation and allows automation, helps to keep the activities for data quality assurance far more constant, reduces the degrees of freedom and results in better comparable data, as several hundred individual implementations could do. Exactly there, GAW monitoring stations can be supported.

In detail the following problems for data preparation at GAW stations are targeted: Data flagging, aggregation, value correction and data export, data selection and real time data delivery. This support is an essential step forward to automated data quality assurance for the worldwide comparability of GAW data.

With this software and workflow approach, it is possible to accompany the whole quality generating process from the sample until to the deliverable data. It offers implemented expertise right in time and has the capability to automate many tedious steps.
A software with good usability offers a basis for a better comparability of results. It reduces the number of degrees of freedom. With ICOS and AGAGE, there exist two examples, that a one software approach enhances comparability of data, which also can be seen from examples in nuclear physics and astrophysics.
The software and algorithms should be known by the community as the knowledge is. Thus, for example, the source code for the dafit software is free available for individual use for science.
The programs have the potential to implement and use the scientific recommendations in an effective way. This is essential for standardization and reduces workload for the personal capacity at GAW stations.
